Examples of great descriptory details {Excerpts from Sherlock Holmes, Volume 1}

Hey guys, so here's a great example of descriptory details that I came across while reading The Complete Sherlock Holmes Volume 1 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Enjoy!

   It was a September evening and not yet seven o'clock, but the day had been a dreary one, and a dense drizzly fog lay low upon the great city. Mud-coloured clouds drooped sadly over the muddy streets. Down the Strand the lamps were but misty splotches of diffused light which threw a feeble circular glimmer upon the slimy pavement. The yellow glare from the shop-windows streamed out into the steamy, vaporous air and threw a murky, shifting radiance across the crowded thoroughfare. There was, to my mind, something eerie and ghostlike in the endless procession of faces which flitted across these narrow bars of light-sad faces and glad, haggard and merry. Like all humankind, the flitted from the gloom into the light and back into the gloom once more. I am not subject to impressions, but the dull, heavy evening, with the strange business upon which we were engaged, combined to make me nervous and depressed. I could see from Miss Morstan's manner that she was suffering from the same feeling. Holmes alone could rise superior to petty influences. {pg. 110}

  We followed the Indian down a sordid and common passage, ill-lit and worse furnished, until he came to a door upon the right, which he threw open. A blaze of yellow light streamed out upon us, and in the centre of the glare there stood a small man with a very high head, a bristle of red hair all around the fringe of it, and a bald, shining scalp which shot out from among it like a mountain-peak from fir-trees. He writhed his hands together as he stood, and his features were in a perpetual jerk-now smiling, now scowling, but never for an instant in repose. Nature had given him a pendulous lip, and a too visible line of yellow and irregular teeth, which he strove feebly to conceal by constantly passing his hand over the lower part of his face. In spite of his obtrusive baldness he gave the impression of youth. In point of fact, he had just turned his thirtieth year.

Quotev {Post: 2}

     Hey guys, I'm currently making a new story on Quotev. The website is just http://www.quotev.com and in the search bar, search Dawn Armaggedon, there will be one of my quizzez below, called Can I Make You Laugh? :DDDDDDDD, so click on that, and then on the quiz, click on the name Dawn Armaggedon with the profile pic of  'Like' a boss. That will lead you to my Quotev profile page, where you just scroll down and look under the 'Created' category. Then, click on the story that's there, called You Turned My Life Upside Down. So, that's the story. Read to find out what it's about, because I'm not spoiling it for you now xP However, I will tell you that the second and third books in the series (yes it is a series xD) are called 'God save the queen.' and 'Lock me up and save yourself.'

   You know what, I will tell you a smidget of what it's about. The story is about this girl named Kassidy, (who is typically a loner, only has two friends, and is a bit shy) who meets this girl named Dagger one day after she's bullied. That night, Kassidy gets a bunch of texts telling her to meet at the park at midnight. So Kassidy goes and finds Dagger waiting for her. Dagger tells her to make a wish and....everything turns upside down. No, not literally, but her best friends hate her, and her enemies are her new "best friends". Now Kassidy has to find away to turn back the tables, but how?
